My review of Tracy’s EP In the City + In the Woods is way overdue:

1.       Crazy in Love – Worth the price of the entire CD, this alternate take on Beyoncé’s hit is a fireball of energy featuring acoustic guitar and violin. I LOVE THIS SONG!

2.       In My Other Life – A sweet song that we first heard a year ago live in Minneapolis. This recording seems a bit sparse, but look for this song on Tracy’s new studio album with a full orchestral accompaniment (that’s a prediction, not a promise). The first few times I heard this song, it was a little jarring to hear Tracy’s harmony track against her lead vocal track; I think that’s because the song sounds like a “live acoustic” version but obviously is not. Still, this is a beautiful, heartfelt track.

3.       I’m No Giant – It’s good to hear this 2002 track that was previously donated to the Respond II charity album. It’s a live track, but there’s no applause at the end and it goes quickly into the next track – a bit jarring. But it’s a beautiful melancholy track that’s I fondly remember from her live performances.

4.       The Idiot in Me – Previously unreleased, this is another song from Tracy’s live performances of recent years. It’s cute and catchy but has never been one of my favorites. With the previous two tracks on this EP, we’ve learned that Tracy is not good with technology, not lovable, no giant, and an idiot. I’m all for being humble, but I think it’s time that Tracy cover a song like “Baby, I’m a Star” or something a bit self-congratulatory. We all wouldn’t be here reading this if we didn’t know that Tracy is one of the best singer-songwriter-musicians around. And she has perfect pitch! Finally some applause at the end of the track reminds us that it’s a live performance.

5.       Kissing the Lipless – A cover of The Shins song that is pleasant enough. I had never heard the song before, so I can’t comment on whether this is a good cover. It seems to fit Tracy well, though at times it sounds more like Lisa Loeb’s style. Again no applause from the audience?

6.       One Hit Wonder – A great live acoustic version of this classic from Tracy’s first album.

7.       Your World Turns Upside Down – The first time I heard this song, I thought it was a cover of a David Byrne song. Taking Byrne’s chord and strings style and making it her own, Tracy has crafted a beautiful song, marred only by the abrupt ending.

8.       Blue Jay Way – Tracy’s haunting cover of George Harrison’s classic brings back special memories of hearing it live for the first time in LA.

9.       Eyes – Tracy goes a little silly on this live version of her recent song from blink the brightest. You can just see her smiling as she sings.

10.    Navy Bean – Another classic from Tracy’s first album. This one has been played live a lot and is on several available recordings. But this particular performance is a lot of fun, as Tracy plays with the song’s timing in spots.

11.    Lily Livered – Another beautiful new song from Tracy closes this EP, with a catchy chorus and transitions from minor to major keys and back. I just need to figure out what the “Ben Hur” reference means.

Overall, obviously I’m biased, but I have to say Tracy has done it again. A consistently enjoyable EP (though is an 11 song disc really just an EP these days?) that is another chronicle of Tracy’s growth as a songwriter, muisican, and performer. Brava!

7/1/05

Ø          More reviews posted on the blink the brightest page. Tracy is seriously cleaning up with this new CD! I’d have to say 95% positive now!

6/25/05

Ø          Just got back from Fingerprints Records, where Tracy did a small in-store set with her guitar player – not sure of the order of songs completely:

o       Something Beautiful (which I missed since I was late – finding a parking place!)

o       And the World Has the Nerve to Keep Turning

o       Eyes

o       All Thumbs

o       Dumbo Sun

o       Freed (solo, without the guitar player).

Ø      Then Tracy signed stuff for us. The new CD was on sale, and when you bought it, you got a great little poster with cool artwork promoting the in-store appearance. I had her sign the outside cardboard of my CD, but not the poster, which I plan to have framed (that’s how nice it is).

Ø          The song “All Thumbs” will be in the TV movie called “Nadine in Date Land” on the Oxygen TV Network. Check your local listings for show times.

Ø          And the reviews for blink the brightest are pouring in! And I estimate very roughly that they are 90% positive! With at least 25-50% saying this is Tracy’s best work to date! Check them out on our blink the brightest page.

Ø          Here’s my early review of the new CD:

A quick review on first listen to the songs on the “blink the brightest” CD. I can’t wait to get this on CD! I am reacting here mostly to the music, as lyrics tend to take me a while to absorb….

1. Something Beautiful – I love this song now; it’s faster than I remember it when she performed it live. I complained about it being the first single before, but I have changed my mind officially—it IS upbeat – not a slow ballad as I remembered it.
2.I Was Born Without You – Love the minor key and the strings in this one. Very catchy. As much as I love Tracy live, I am slowly being reminded that I always prefer a studio recording to a live performance. That goes for all my favorite musical artists.
3. And The World Has the Nerve To Keep Turning – Another song that seems faster than when live… or I am simply imagining it? Funny but this one I prefer slower. Anyway, love the harmonies in the chorus, and also love when Tracy sings almost a cappella near the end.
4. Eyes – Supposedly the same as on “Bee”, but I am hearing more harmonies and dubs… aren’t I? Love those background voices and that guitar! I have always loved this one. Someone correct me if I am crazy thinking the 2 versions are slightly different.

5. Take Your Love Out On Me – Anticipation… a truly NEW Tracy song for me, since I’ve never heard it live…. Wow – a very interesting Indiany kinda George Harrisonny feel. I’m sure it will grow on me.
6. Whether You Fall – Wow – just like it was live – with Tracy alone at the piano. A great showcase for Tracy’s songwriting talents – and you generally don’t think of her sitting at the piano – but now you will.
7. Dumbo Sun – One of my very favorites from her concerts – a very catchy, upbeat song with a kickass honky-tonk piano – now one of my favorites from this CD.
8. All Thumbs – Supposedly different from the “Bee” EP, but I can’t hear a difference. Basically a beautiful song, while not my favorite, I do love the bridge.
9. Naked – My absolute favorite from the concerts – so glad (and relieved) it is on this album. This song is so beautiful in parts that it makes me cry. I get chills at the beginning and tears throughout. This one deserves an instant replay. (And I hope she plays it live when she appears on TV).
10. Shine – This one was definitely re-worked since “Bee”. Shorter by 30 seconds, a new echo-ey intro, with more of an anthemic feel overall. Also, it’s in a slightly lower key, so Tracy’s vocals are much stronger, with less falsetto. I like this version better.
11. Wilting Flower – Another new song I had never heard before. Very unique, complex, and haunting. I like it!
12. Did I Sleep Through it All? – A good closer for the album. The strings and piano near the end are my favorite part.

Overall – I may be biased (OK, I am little biased!) but this is Tracy’s most accessible and solid album yet. It’s truly representative of where she is musically now. It’s great – at first listen it’s great – and I think it will only get better with repeated listening. OK, I had heard all the songs but two, but never in the studio versions. And I am biased. And part of me, perhaps a small part, misses a hard-rocking song like Navy Bean. But if you are planning to share your love of Tracy with another person, this is the album that might make them a fan too.

4/20/05

Ø        HAPPY BIRTHDAY TRACY! (Her birthday was actually yesterday).

Ø        Tracy will appear in concert tonight at Caribbean Lights in Austin TX, as part of the South by Southwest Festival.

Ø          CLIPS of Tracy’s new studio album, “Blink the Brightest” are now available on many sites, including:

o         MP3.com

o         VH1.com

o         MTV.com

Note that all these sites list track 11 as “Wilting Flower”, and not “The Indelible Man”.

At this point I am not sure why there is a discrepancy. I am fairly sure they are not the same song, as has been suggested by some. “Wilting Flower” was mentioned in an article from 2001 as being about her mother’s battle with breast cancer; “The Indelible Man” was definitely played live on 8/26/04 (I was there) when Tracy specifically called it by that name (I don’t remember the lyrics but I can’t imagine that title for a song about her mother).

Ø          Tracy’s official website now has a new message board, no longer using Pbroards.  Just click on Messages on her official website. You will have to re-register on the new board.

Ø          The Tracy Bonham Web Directory is finally getting its own domain name and will be moving to a new web server! We have been on the web for over four years, and we will finally have a permanent name that will not change. The annoying banners at the top of our page will go away! We will also begin making some design changes to improve the site. Please bear with us as we make these changes in 2005! Thank you for your continued support.

After missing the last 2 shows here in LA because I moved to a new apartment and was busy packing, I saw Tracy’s final show last night at the Hotel Café. Here’s my report:

Tracy greeted me on my way in, and introduced me to her manager, Peter.

Overall a great show, if a little short. The crowd was smaller than usual until near the end. They really got into the show by song 6. I was waiting to hear “Naked” but alas, to no avail. I can only hope it’s still slated for the new album or possibly the fall EP.

The songs with a "*" were the highlights of the show for me.

[Tracy solo on guitar…]

*1. The Real

*2. Sharks Can’t Sleep

[John B. joins Tracy on stage…]

3. Shine

*4. The Indelible Man
(1st time hearing this song; always great to get a clarification on the exact title of a song, too – it definitely contains the word “the”!)

[Tracy solo on piano…]

5. Whether You Fall

[Tracy solo on electric violin…]

*6. Blue Jay Way

(Wow! Just wow.)

[Butch joins Tracy on stage to play percussion. Tracy on guitar… then on violin]

*7. Freed / Milkshake

(I wasn’t sure what the segued song was – had to look it up on the web by the lyrics… it’s a hip-hop song by Kelis… I think Butch was the one who started singing it… according to Tracy, it just happened and she “went with it”)

[Greg joins Tracy on stage to play bass, and Matt joins on piano…]

*8. Dumbo Sun

9. And The World Has The Nerve to Keep Turning

*10. Eyes

[Dave joins the gang on stage… but uh-oh, we’re running late and there are still 4 songs left… not enough time… Tracy negotiates… she offers 4 quick songs with no talking in between… rejected… they finally reach a compromise at 2 more songs….]

*11. Something Beautiful

(I had never “*”ed this song before as a highlight for me, but hearing it with the “full band” changed my mind.)

12. All Thumbs

The songs with a "*" were the highlights of the show for me.

8/13/04

Tracy will be opening for Kid Lightning in Spain from October 4th to 17th. She might play together with Kid Lightning (a song will be recorded just for the tour).

7/22/04

My report from last night’s Hotel Café show:

A great show, despite the noise at the back of the Hotel Café from people waiting for the next act to go on. The club managers REALLY need to do something about this – it’s quite annoying not to be able to hear well because people are talking! I closed the curtains at one point but someone opened them up again. Next time I will sit/stand closer to the stage (last night my friend did not want to stand, otherwise I would have).

This time I remembered my pencil, so here’s the setlist:

[Just Tracy alone on the stage…]

*1. Every Breath

(pausing here to let those who have just fainted return to consciousness….)

*2. Sharks Can’t Sleep

*3. Lily-Livered

(Tracy said this was an old song that she never played live before; anyone have any more info?)

4. The Idiot In Me

[Tracy’s mom joins her on stage]

*5. Big Foot (Extended Version)

(Tracy explained that this song was sung/written by her grandfather while the family was on vacation in Sonoma – finally an explanation for that song on Liverpool Sessions! I never knew why it was on there!)

[Peter Adams joins Tracy and her mom on stage]

6. Shine

[Mom leaves the stage]

*7. Dumbo Sun

(I LOVE this song but Tracy didn’t say it was on the new album. L)

[Tracy at the piano…]

*8. Whether You Fall

[Tracy on violin…]

*9. Hind Sight

(not sure of the title)

*10. <Bulgarian Folk Song>

(Tracy gave the title in a different language and then said it was a Bulgarian folk song; very short but cool)

*11. I Was Born Without You

[The rest of the band joins her on stage…]

12. All Thumbs

13. And The World Has The Nerve To Keep Turning

14. Mother Mother

(by request; only the first verse is performed, with her mom screaming the “Everything’s fine!” line from the audience)

15. Something Beautiful

The songs with a "*" were the highlights of the show for me. Looking forward to 3 shows in August!!!
